matt bigler joins us from san jose to explain it. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, we're talking about the secure communities federal immigration fingerprint program which has been in the news quite a bit recently. it basically allows federal immigration authorities to access the fingerprint data from suspects who are arrested at the local level. if those fingerprints come back and they are identifying someone mo is in the country illegally -- someone who is in the country illegally, they can deport them. critics say those who are deported are arrested for minor violations like running a traffic like and then they are deported. we talked to santa clara county supervisor dave cortezcy about this. he says that too often immigrant families are being split apart by secure communities. >> we have children who are here who have a right to be here. we have children who are in school have a right to be in school and they are suddenly separated from one or both of their parents. it creates a burden on the system. >>
